Deborah – the art of listening in tango

Before the first step is born, we listen.

“Deborah” is not a song you simply dance through. It carries a silence that first wants to be filled – with attention, with breath, with the courage not to anticipate anything.

Perhaps you know the film “Once Upon a Time in America”, the source of this composition by Ennio Morricone. It is the music for the girl who dreams of becoming a star, a famous dancer. She practises her dance in her father’s storeroom, while the four boys who will later become the four famous gangsters watch her through a gap in the wall of the toilet next door. What is so enchanting about the scene is how completely connected she is with herself as she practises – and yet she senses exactly that she is being watched, and these gazes shape her dance. A very special feeling of longing arises: the dusty light of the storeroom, her awareness of beauty, the yearning looks of the boys.

Khatia Buniatishvili’s interpretation heightens this feeling even further. That yearning tension created by the extremely swaying timing and the endless pauses. To connect with a piece of music like this – to feel the story it awakens in you. Simply by listening, but also by going deeper: what did the composer want to express? What touches me in this music? How can I connect with it – and express it through my own movement in space?

That is why we never begin our workshops with steps. We begin with the music: connect with it first – then with your dance partner, then with the movement. This order changes everything. What unfolds in this excerpt from the Eros Tango Logos Show 2026 is not a choreography set to music, but an answer to it.

Tango in the here & now means: the song decides, not the plan. And exactly this listening – this awake, curious listening – is one of the most important skills we want to pass on. Not only on the dance floor.
